FOR STATE GOVERNMENT INTERN

OPEN TO CURRENT COLLEGE STUDENTS ATTENDING A UNIVERSITY OR COLLEGE OR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES WHO HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED AT A UNIVERSITY OR COLLEGE

The Arizona Department of Transportation’s (ADOT) Engineering and Technical Intern Program is for college students pursuing a career as a professional with the Intermodal Transportation Division of ADOT.

The interns will be introduced to planning, designing, building and maintenance of the federal, state and local highway system. This program gives engineering, construction management, landscape architecture and environmental science majors the opportunity to gain practical experience during the summer as interns in a variety of areas including highway construction projects; material testing; bridge, roadway and traffic design; and construction survey. Placement is based on Department needs and may vary according to the Groups and Districts they are assigned.

Duties include: Computing quantities of materials needed for a construction project; reviewing construction contract documents for payment; recording contractor’s daily work activities; reviewing engineering plans, reports and analysis; learning and performing inspection of minor construction items; documenting and reporting results; learning and performing material testing and sampling in the field and lab; documenting and reporting results; reviewing certified payrolls ensuring compliance with the Davis Bacon Act; quantity input utilizing ADOT’s computer applications; answering and directing phone calls; distributing, logging and processing mail; delivering samples and running errands required in a Construction Office; learning and performing quantity calculations; performing geometry checks for bridges and roadway projects; reviewing minor shop drawings; modeling and designing bridge elements using computer software; learning theories behind calculating bridge load capacity ratings; calculating load capacity; maintaining databases; assisting bridge inspection team in the field; reading and interpreting bridge plans, updating bridge inspection data; digital documentation; taking measurements; drawing vertical clearance and channel profile diagrams. May drive a state vehicle in the course and scope of performing state business.

Knowledge, skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge in basic mathematics, geometry and trigonometry; basic engineering principles;

Skilled in oral and written communications; interpersonal relations with fellow employees, the public and contractor’s personnel; personal computer operation; lab and field equipment operation.

Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle; work in extreme weather conditions; to learn federal, state and local laws applicable to area of assignment; office equipment including a personal computer, phones, faxes, copiers, printers, etc.; Microsoft software.

Note: Must posses a valid driver’s license and have transportation.

The Ideal Candidate: Must be currently pursuing a degree in one of the following disciplines: Engineering, Construction Management, Environmental Science or Landscape Architecture; Or a high school graduate by the time of hire, accepted to a college or university in one of the same majors mentioned.

1. Scholarship for Entry Fee for AZ ASLA Awards

If you are chosen, this scholarship will cover to entry fee for the 2011 AZ ASLA Awards. Entry deadline for project submission to AZ ASLA Award Competition is March 18th and ASLA-ASU scholarship deadline is March 23rd at 4:00pm. 2. Scholarship for 2011 AzASLA Conference and Gala Registration

AZ ASLA’s 2011 annual conference and awards gala is April 23th. The conference takes place in the afternoon with eduction session and tours and the awards banquet and gala is in the evening. Please see attached form for correct documentation, which is needed to receive scholarship. Scholarship deadline is April 15th, 2011.

3. Scholarship for LABash Conference Registration

LABash 2011 will be hosted by Purdue, in West Lafayette, Indiana on March 25-26, 2011. Keynote speakers include Patrick Dougherty, a willow sculpture artist (http://www.stickwork.net/) and ASLA National President Jonathan Mueller. 4. General Landscape Architecture Conference Registration

ASLA ASU is offering a scholarship for financial assistance with registration to a conference of your choice. We have many conference and training opportunities in the Phoenix area every month and this is your opportunity to apply for funds to attend one. The conference must have application within the field of landscape architecture and your scholarship application essay must directly address the benefits you will receive, as a landscape architecture student, from the conference. See attached form for correct documentation, which is needed to receive scholarship. Scholarship deadline is March 31, 2011.

Phoenix Home & Garden announces its 2011 Grand Tour of Gardens featuring six wonderful landscapes located in Phoenix and Paradise Valley. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Desert Botanical Garden.

How can you see these Gardens for free, get ideas for your own home landscape, and help the Desert Botanical Garden all at the same time? Be a volunteer for the event. Volunteer duties include but are not limited to: Greeting and collecting guest tickets, ensuring attendees stay within designated tour areas of the garden, guiding guests on designated areas to park, AND answering any garden questions and maintain the overall flow of the tour.

There are two shifts (morning shift – 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and afternoon shift – 12:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.).
