The ideal candidates will be college/university students majoring in engineering, construction management, landscape architecture or environmental science OR graduated from high school at the time of hire and accepted to a college or university in one of the mentioned majors.

FOR STATE GOVERNMENT INTERN

OPEN TO CURRENT COLLEGE STUDENTS ATTENDING A UNIVERSITY OR COLLEGE OR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES WHO HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED AT A UNIVERSITY OR COLLEGE

The Arizona Department of Transportation’s (ADOT) Engineering and Technical Intern Program is for college students pursuing a career as a professional with the Intermodal Transportation Division of ADOT.

The interns will be introduced to planning, designing, building and maintenance of the federal, state and local highway system. This program gives engineering, construction management, landscape architecture and environmental science majors the opportunity to gain practical experience during the summer as interns in a variety of areas including highway construction projects; material testing; bridge, roadway and traffic design; and construction survey. Placement is based on Department needs and may vary according to the Groups and Districts they are assigned.

Duties include: Computing quantities of materials needed for a construction project; reviewing construction contract documents for payment; recording contractor’s daily work activities; reviewing engineering plans, reports and analysis; learning and performing inspection of minor construction items; documenting and reporting results; learning and performing material testing and sampling in the field and lab; documenting and reporting results; reviewing certified payrolls ensuring compliance with the Davis Bacon Act; quantity input utilizing ADOT’s computer applications; answering and directing phone calls; distributing, logging and processing mail; delivering samples and running errands required in a Construction Office; learning and performing quantity calculations; performing geometry checks for bridges and roadway projects; reviewing minor shop drawings; modeling and designing bridge elements using computer software; learning theories behind calculating bridge load capacity ratings; calculating load capacity; maintaining databases; assisting bridge inspection team in the field; reading and interpreting bridge plans, updating bridge inspection data; digital documentation; taking measurements; drawing vertical clearance and channel profile diagrams. May drive a state vehicle in the course and scope of performing state business.

Knowledge, skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge in basic mathematics, geometry and trigonometry; basic engineering principles;

Skilled in oral and written communications; interpersonal relations with fellow employees, the public and contractor’s personnel; personal computer operation; lab and field equipment operation.

Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle; work in extreme weather conditions; to learn federal, state and local laws applicable to area of assignment; office equipment including a personal computer, phones, faxes, copiers, printers, etc.; Microsoft software.

Note: Must posses a valid driver’s license and have transportation.

The Ideal Candidate: Must be currently pursuing a degree in one of the following disciplines: Engineering, Construction Management, Environmental Science or Landscape Architecture; Or a high school graduate by the time of hire, accepted to a college or university in one of the same majors mentioned.
